Trainkos in Kosovo: Train Routes, Tickets and History
Trainkos is Kosovo’s national railway company and operates the country’s passenger rail services. For travelers, the most relevant domestic connection is the Pristina–Peja (Prishtina–Pejë) route, linking Kosovo’s capital with the important western city of Peja. The journey takes around two hours and offers an interesting alternative to the much more extensive intercity bus network.
Where Does Trainkos Operate?
Trainkos operates passenger services on a limited part of Kosovo’s railway network. The main route for travelers is Pristina–Peja, with trains also serving intermediate stations such as Fushë Kosovë (Kosovo Polje).
Historically, the railway network was considerably more extensive. Connections linked Pristina with cities including Mitrovica, Prizren and Peja, while international rail services connected Kosovo with Skopje in North Macedonia. Today, however, not all of these routes have regular passenger services.
For visitors exploring Kosovo, this means that the train is primarily a transport option between Pristina and Peja, while buses provide much broader coverage of the country.
How to Buy Trainkos Tickets
Trainkos does not offer the same comprehensive online booking experience found with major European railway operators. Travelers should therefore check the current timetable before travelling and be prepared to purchase tickets at railway stations or through Trainkos' available sales channels.
This is particularly important because the frequency of services is relatively limited. Unlike the extensive bus network in Kosovo, you cannot simply assume that there will be another train shortly after a missed departure.
A Short History of Railways in Kosovo
The history of rail transport in Kosovo goes back to the Ottoman period. The first railway reached the territory of today's Kosovo in 1874, when a line was built between Hani i Elezit and Fushë Kosovë, later continuing towards Mitrovica. The railway became an important part of the transport infrastructure of the region.
During the period of Yugoslavia, the railway network was expanded and integrated into the Yugoslav railway system. Railways played an important role in connecting Kosovo's major towns with the wider region.
The Kosovo War in the late 1990s had a major impact on the railway system. Following the war, the railway infrastructure and operations underwent significant institutional changes.
In 2011, the former Kosovo Railways were divided into separate companies. Trainkos became responsible for railway transport and passenger and freight operations, while Infrakos took responsibility for railway infrastructure.
Train or Bus in Kosovo?
For most relations there is simply no other choice that the bus or a private taxi since there is no active railway connection you coud us. Buses generally offer more destinations and departures, while the train provides a more relaxed journey and a chance to experience an important part of Kosovo's transport history.
